The carers allowance is a sick joke and an insult both to carer and the disabled. It barely makes any difference or improvement to the recipients way of life,I was my wife's carer for eight years after she suffered a stroke,I was self employed at the time and was unable to work due to the full time care she needed and my depression, which started when she had the stroke.
We lived on benefit alone and after I had cleared all my work related debts we were penniless, which brings me back to the carers allowance,The Government is getting off very lightly when it comes to paying for care in the community when you consider what the cost of a nursing home would be. I hope i don't sound too bitter because we did have some happy times, tho' we could have had many more with a bit more financial help.
So to all you carers out there, take whatever support you can.you deserve every penny you get and a lot more.

The carer's allowance is paid to those with a disability who need extra care provided outside the NHS. The reason the allowance is constantly taken away is that the current government believe that the number of people on benefit should be reduced. As such the Department of Work and Pensions will systematically stop someone's allowance to see (a) if the should qualify and (b) if the stopped allowance is appealed.

Carers Allowance is a contribution benefit so if someone recieves this & is unable to work they can still have Ni contributions paid so they can claim state pension when they need to, just like women who stay at home to look after their children because Child Benefit also tops up their NI
Yes some one can work & claim Carers Allowance as long as they recieve less than approx £84 pwk & care the person receiving DLA for 35 hrs or more pwk this is ok

Well done Pierehead, I think you have summed it up for all of us.
My partner and I have struggled to live on DLA and he can't get CLA because I am not on the right level of mobility or care component, yet he still looks after me.
He has saved the government thousands of pounds, yet he never complains that he can't go out much because he stays in to look after me. There is no salary enough to pay him for what he does and the sacrafices he makes.
It is time this government stopped looking after outsiders and sending so much money out of the country when there are those that need the support here.
