Janet and Colin Bord have written a number of books of unexplained mysteries, including coincidences, visions, UFOs, winged people, lake and sea monsters etc.

I don't know about murders - you may have to look under specific names. Others have said visit the library; also, browse in a large bookshop to see what's around.

For unexplained mysteries, you can start with the Bible.
For real life murders (?) I guess you mean factual books and not fictional, then "Helter Skelter" is excellent. About the Charles Manson Killings. Yuk!
My ex-boyfriend had an anthology of the biographies of the top twenty most famous killers; it included Bonnie and Clyde, Dr. Crippen etc. I am really sorry though because I don't remember the title. Bet your librarian could help.

For real-life murders, read the classic work by Truman Capote called "In Cold Blood." You may also enjoy the movie they made from the book called "Capote."

There is a book about Lizzie Borden by Arnold R. Brown - this is fascinating reading about the suspected axe murderer which includes trial transcripts.

There was a book I read years ago about Ed Gein (maybe spelled wrong). He was the real life crazy guy that the movie Psycho was based on. It was a good read. That guy was a nut job.

I once read the story of Fred and Rose West, and it was totally horrific - I couldn't get it out of my head for ages. I actually haven't seen it about for a few years either, it was called 'Happy Like Murderers'.
Dunno if that's too specific but if you do find it, be warned that it is twisted.

I don't know good ones to recommend, but I can tell you what NOT to read. I've read a few true crime books by Ann Rule, and I'm sorry to say, her writing leaves a LOT to be desired. Hopefully that'll save ya some wasted reading time.
