Cheesecloth - a coarse, loosely woven cotton gauze - was named that because it was originally used for wrapping up cheese.
Cheesecloth clothes with their semi opaque quality were ideal for the hippy peasant tops and flouncy maxi skirts in the 70s.
It's a really nice cool material to wear in summer and doesn't need much ironing!

A coarse, loosely woven cotton gauze, originally used for wrapping cheese.

This lightweight natural cotton cloth won't fall apart when wet and will not flavour the food it touches. Cheesecloth has a multitude of culinary uses including straining liquids, forming a packet for herbs and spices (as with bouquet garni) that can be dropped into a soup or stock pot and lining molds (such as for coeur à la crème). It comes in both fine and coarse weaves and is available in gourmet shops, supermarkets and the kitchen section of many department stores. In Britain it's sometimes called butter muslin.

in the old days, people poured the dairy solids into cheesecloth, squeezed out the residual liquids, and molded cheese with it.
now cheese must be manufactured to the point that we don't need cheesecloth for the intended purpose it was designed for.

still, there are other uses for it...and WTHeck, are you trying to give me the giggles? funny question, really..

as the guy who invented it decided to call it cheesecloth, just like the guy who in vented the telephone and everything else you use everyday.
maybe one day you will invent something and some sad person will put a question on yahoo asking you you decided on such a silly name.
