The processor usually can't be change... However you can increase the RAM and that will improve the performance. Some (not many) laptops have upgradeable video cards check your manual.
The no cost alternative is to reduce the number of programs that start each time you boot your computer. Start>Run and type msconfig and hit Enter. Click on the startup tab and uncheck any program that doesn't have to start each time your computer boots. Do not disable your antivirus and firewall programs.

Once you get to 512MB, the amount of RAM will matter very little. Some programs will appreciate more (like 1GB), but Windows and most apps won't need more than 512MB.
That's the advantage of having a desktop. You can swap out the motherboard, CPU, and RAM with the next generation to help you stay current. Unfortunately for a laptop, you're quite limited in this respect.
