I agree with Neko but also have to add that sometimes the performer changes their style or gendre of music, and the fans don't care as much about the new style.
But yes, Age, Audience listening choices and changes in the artist performances/behaviour are factors.
Plus some of the younger performers are sooo sexy in looks and voice.

I think it could be for a few reasons...
1. They look better when their younger
2. When their older they have probably had more scandal in their careers than when they were younger
3. Peoples tastes change, their fans may move on
