originally it was oil or spirits. (spirit level they were called)
presently it is a synthetic liquid.

That is the filtered guts from caterpillars. They stomp all the green juices out of them to fill up those levels.

Whatever is cheapest to manufacture (aka water). It does not matter what is in there. Manufacturers add color just to make it easier to see. Any liquid does the same thing.
