Printing. The inventor in Europe was Guttenberg.
The reason printing was such an important invention was that it made possible the widespread communication of information. Before then books had to be copied one at a time. In Europe this was done by monks who were interested in relgious works, and not inventions that might upset the power of the religious establishment.
It is no accident that the development of printing was followed by the Reformation with all its scientific discoveries, as well as philosophical and religious turmoil.
More recent inventions that have had a huge impact on society, such as steam power and the internal combustion engine, would never have been possible without printing so that their inventors could develop from a base of existing knowledge.

The printing press. It allowed mass printing of text which meant for the first time knowledge could be stored and passed on in large quantities. This of course led to more knowledge in the hands of more people which snowballed into a technological revolution. If you take away the printing press, all that followed it would never have been possible.

That is a really big question. You might want to reduce the time frame a little. I'm going to have to go with electricity (which is part discovery, part invention) or the Atomic Bomb.

According to my 90 year old Gran reliable contraception.
Why? It allows the more intelligent part of our population the freedom to take a full part in our society (men and women). Fewer healthy children must be better than 20 sickly kids. The fewer the children a family have the more they can invest in them (time, love, money......)

Concorde and look what happened there!
It just shows that we're now going backwards in technology and invention......there has been and there are no plans to design/build anything remotely similar- what a waste!
