If I start taking them today when will it be ok to have safe sex? Can I buy them in any pharmacy or do I need to get a doctor's prescription? I'm from UK.

In Britain, it is now the practice to take your first-ever Pill on the first day of your period. If you do this, you should be protected immediately – so you can have sex whenever you like.

Practices vary in other countries, and their Pill packs may contain more than 21.

You need to be prescribed them by a Doctor in the UK, you can do this at your doctors surgery, or from a family planning clinic (that's how I did it when I first started). You can find your nearest one here...

I'm sorry to get all big sister on you here, but PLEASE remember that the pill won't protect you AT ALL from sexually transmitted infections. So please be completely sure about both you and your partner's sexual history, and even consider getting tested (which can be sometimes be done at the family planning clinic) before you have sex without condoms.

There is some excellent information here...

If you don't start exactly on the day the instruction on the package says (either the third day from the first day of your period or the first day of your period) you have to take it seven straight days to make sure you are protected from pregnancy. Meaning: Do it only after you have taken pill #7. Before that use a condom or abstain

If you follow instructions you may do it as soon as you start--but its gross because you are bloody and all.

Here in the Phils. you can buy it over the counter. Don't know system in UK. try buying over the counter, the worst they can say is it needs a doctors prescription.
