Can people survive in a happy relationship where one is spiritual and the other one isn't? How do you handle it? One takes and the other gives too much, and is always being blackmailed with divorce if they don't do as the other wants? I have a good friend like that, and feels trapped. Any suggestions? For the sake of the children, he stays. My heart really goes out to them, it is not a relationship I am in, but a very close friend.

Oh oh,sounds a mite "too" close to me,watch yourself here-you may be used as a "crutch"!My feeling is that your "friend" would have got to know this spiritual side of his partner before he got married,it wouldn't have been kept from him-so why marry in the first place? There are children involved here, suggest you back off a little-let him sort this out.

i think the one who feels religion/spirtuality is important should go ahead and pursue it in their life, whether or not the spouse decides to follow or not-if the spouse sees how it affects positively that person's life, that spouse might get interested in pursuing it for themselves. Also there is a tendancy for males to think religious feelings may not be "macho" so perhaps some contacts that are "normal kind of guys" and who are also spiritual, would be a good thing to expose to that spouse..But there is no way to force such an issue. Growth is possible for both people and if they grow too far aprt a divorce might bein the future.

Get ready for a lot of heartache. I still dont' get why people don't talk about religion, sex, finances, spending, where you'll live, etc.... before they get together with someone.

There's not much you can do. The worst thing you can do to a child is to raise them in a loveless home.
