I am pretty good at Scrabble. My daughter and I are very competitive when we play, and we are relatively evenly matched, so it is usually a very good game. Generally in our games we each score close to or over 400 points.
Scrabble is much more than knowing a lot of words. It is also a visual spatial game, so it is often about finding and being able to use the unusual spaces on the board. It is about strategy and knowing a lot of little tricks with words - such as which words can take an s or a d or an r at the end or other letters at the beginning. It is about being able to keep track of which letters are already played and knowing which letters are still available. It is about blocking the other player so s/he can't get the best spaces.
Here are a couple of good sites that might interest you.

it isn't just about a large vocab. it is about scoring points. depending on the dictionary that you play, there are words that you won't know the meanings to and most you will probably never use in everyday language. to play competitive scrabble, try to get your average score to between 350 and 400 to start playing amateur tournaments.
my average is about 360 and i struggle playing against some seasoned players who are known to score 680 points in a game, i kid you not.
to get really good at it, play lots and practice lots. check the following link out. it's where some really serious scrabblers get their daily dose of practice. plus you have options to play TWL (American) or SOWPOD (international) dictionaries.
oh and one more thing, it is a myth that scrabble helps with your english... it may help build your vocabulary, but only if you bother to search the definitions. otherwise, you'll end up with a memory bank full of words without any use for them!

I'm no good at Scrabble. Knowing a bunch of big words doesn't help because you only get seven tiles so what would help is knowing a bunch of obscure small words that are made up of the more uncommon letters.

Having an extensive vocabulary is only part of it. It helps to be good at anagrams as well.
I'm reasonably decent at it, but not great.
