there are just 3 main parks around the London area, Thorpe park Chessington and Lego land.
without sounding like a salesman - each park has lots to offer for all ages.
i have been to all three this year with my wife and 2 sons aged 7 & 1, andall 4 of us found something to keep us happy at each place.

unfortnately, you do have to travel to get to a better park.
on the way to Alton towers there is a great place called Drayton Manor, this has rides (europes first stand-up rollercoaster), a zoo and last time i went had a dinosoar walk.
it is only 30 miles south of alton towers though.

I went to Thorpe to go on Stealth but it was closed because of the football? That seemed like a really poor excuse to me.

Where ever you go check that the best rides are operating on that day first, it will save a long drive and loads of disappointment.

P.S There are more queue jumpers at Thorpe and staff don't give a s**t.

Chessington World of Adventures (zoo animals & rides)7
have only been via car so not sure about train or bus connections
Legoland (best for young children under 10 years) Windsor
Train station has buses that run to the park regularly
Thorpe Park (range of rides for all ages, has farm animals too)
Staines or Chertsey train stations, sorry not sure about buses, but it does have bus stop, so guess they do run services

it's easily Thorpe Park, but say it's pissing down and you don't want to leave London. You could try Funland in London's Trocadero centre. It's indoor and near Picadilly Circus
