The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from national standards bodies. Founded on February 23, 1947, the organization produces world-wide industrial and commercial standards, the so-called ISO standards.
While the ISO defines itself as a non-governmental organization (NGO), its ability to set standards which often become law through treaties or national standards makes it more powerful than most NGOs, and in practice it acts as a consortium with strong links to governments. Participants include several major corporations and at least one standards body from each member country.
ISO cooperates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which is responsible for standardization of electrical equipment.
ISO 9000 is a family of ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) standards for quality management systems.
ISO 9000 was developed from the British Standards Institution's BS 5750. The ISO 9000 standards are maintained by ISO and administered by accreditation and certification bodies.
Although the standards originated in manufacturing, they are now employed across a wide range of other types of organizations. In fact, according to ISO in 2004, "service sectors now account by far for the highest number of ISO 9001:2000 certificates - about 31% of the total" - source: the ISO Survey 2004
Some countries re-label ISO 9000 as a national standard. (e.g. IR 9000 in Iran and TS-ISO-9000 in Turkey).
ISO 9000 does not guarantee the quality of end products and services; rather, it certifies that consistent business processes are being applied.
Good luck.

These are standards of quality. If a Company and its product and services pass through the stringent stipulations of these quality norms, they are certified by the competent authority , and declared to be an ISO 9001 or 14001 company, as the case may be. Presently No Government Tender or Order is placed on a Company or firm, if it does not have ISO certification.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer of standards.
ISO 9000 is concerned with "quality management". This means what the organization does to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements and continually to improve its performance in this regard. ISO 14000 is primarily concerned with "environmental management". This means what the organization does to minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities, and continually to improve its environmental performance.
