It never fails. Every time I go to the Filipino chat room, we'll have a nice conversation, then, towards the end, they ask you if you can send them some money. I know that the Philippines is a poor country and that the poverty level is very high (I have been there and seen it for myself), but does that make it ok for them to ask you to send them money. I've had some women not even beat around the bush. The first thing they want to know is if I have a job. The second thing they ask is if we have Western Union for money transfers. Is there a culture in the Philippines that makes these young women feel that it's OK to ask Americans for money? I don't mind contributing to a charity that would help the needy in the Philippines, but I am really turned off by individuals whom I don't even know asking for money.

Just to make it clear, I have been to the Philippines and have met a lot of wonderful people there. They are some of the nicest people I know. And I also know that not all Filipinas are like that. I use Yahoo Messenger's chat rooms to chat with people from all over the world, because I'm a teacher and I'm interested in the world's cultures. As has been said by one of the responders, it is like this all over Asia, where there is a lot of poverty and a lot of people unemployed. Please...I don't mean to offend any of my Philippine friends, they are courtious, polite, and will give you the shirt off their back. I'm sure this is just a minority of the population, and is caused by desperation.

Sad but true, well of course not all of them ask strangers for money. I think the bottom line is that some need money and what's the easiest way to get one? That is to ask someone for money. And one of the reason for that is that not everyone has gone to school. Not everyone had a formal education or even graduated from college since it's not like other countries that if you're a high school graduate, you'd end up having a job. In the Philippines, not everyone is employed, not everyone is born with silver spoon in their mouth, not everyone gets lucky enough to have a home of their one and others. And if you thought that's the only thing they want from you, you're wrong. Some would expect that they could go to America and other countries with the help of the one they're chatting with. Like I said, not all of them. Some are really good people.

I guess it's just fine that they ask money from strangers , the thing is it all depends on the stranger. If he oblige to it, well its his loss. Better be careful.

I'm afraid it's pretty common down there.

Of course, it is because of the economy and lack of jobs. Desperate people will do desperate things. I have a friend there who says lots of women will "work" in Internet cafes for 8 to 10 hours on their chat mates...

Not uncommon to have a dozen or more suckers sending them money.

Realize, this isn't ALL Philippine women doing this.

They are a very poor people with nothing and have taken street begging to a higher level.

Some asian cultures can be very rude about such things. I am in Korea now and the Koreans are very nice, but they are beggars and don't think anything of it. We have Koreans come into our dorm once a month to do maintenance and they don't think twice about looking in your refridgerator or pantry for food or drinks. They are like that with each other as well. It's perfectly acceptable to go into someone's home and take what you want to eat.
The Koreans are giving, but they are a begging society at the same time. I'm sure my Korean friends would give me the shirts off their backs if I asked.
It is the way they are raised. To them it's not begging, it's just how to behave to get what you want.
They have a phrase that says, "Crying baby gets milk". In otherwords, keep begging for something until you get it.

Many of those women you mention are sold into prostitution by their own families at young ages, so begging is nothing to them.
I know many guys who married Phillipino women and got scammed. They are forced to be con artists by their living conditions. You can't blame them, but you have to protect yourself at the same time.

They preyed on military men. When Clark AFB closed about 10 years ago, it was a big blow to their economy. However, many of them managed to marry GI's and ruin their lives.

Those women are prostitutes by nature and wind up cheating on you, stealing your money and making your life a nightmare.

Be careful of any Phillipino woman.

They're not all like that. Some of them are very nice. But get to know them really well before you start a relationship.

I'm a filipino woman and I've never thought of going on line to ask complete strangers for money. And I have never known any of my friends to have acted in such an embarassing manner either. I have heard of stuff like that happening here in my country, but I've been informed those mostly happen on cyberporn chat channels. I suggest you find other friendlier chatrooms or forums to post in and/or avoid/iggy those kind of women.

i am a filipina. it is illegal to solicit money anywhere. the government together with the ngo's are trying their best to stop this but it is very hard since a lot of americans and europeans engage them in this kind of trade. this is not unique to the philippines. it is also a problem of other asian countries.

although, its a very small percentage against the whole population but it's still not okay. it's not in our culture and nature. so if you don't want to be duped....check yourself and don't add to our problems.

They probably do it because they have found that it works. Next time you're in a chat room with them, ask them for money first.

i must say i was really surprised to see the question and thought it was just another foolish question. however, from the replies, it does seem to be true to certain extent .. i had no idea. they must be really desparate for money or really habituated to asking money from people or may be they do it as prank?

i was just wondering .. if they are soo poor how do they manage to get online? are PCs and internet connection free in phillipine?
