The film is technically accurate down to the most minute details.
In terms of plot line, it is a melding of three or so WWII stories.

The first being that a small group of US Rangers (C Co, 2nd Bn.) landed at Omaha Beach. "Capt. Miller" (Tom Hanks) was actaully Capt Ralph Gorenson), and did he did lead the fight up the Vierville draw.

"Private Ryan" was actually Fritz Niland, of Tonawanda NY, and had 3 brothers Killed at St. Mere-Eglise,Utah Beach, and Burma ( the last one was actually captured, but no one knew it at the time) . in the same week. The War Department simply had him removed from the theater, (without the mission in the movie)

The third story is the 101st holding the bridge position. It is a collection of several actions of that day by that unit.

In terms of vehcles, equipment, and most tactics it is first rate. It is doubtfull that a US Army Capt. would be sent a so small a mission, as they had Sgt. leading whole Companies by the end of the second day. Certain personalities of the characters and thier actions are a bit outside of what 1944 US GI's may be likened to, but in overall terms, it tells an important story, (the Normandy landings, not looking for Pvt Ryan), in a historically accurate fashion,

i don't know about all of it but the scene where the mom is in the kitchen, the officer comes to the house door and she knows another son has died. She collapses to the floor. It was so realistic. I'm sure that did happen to many moms.

it's just a movie with the historic setting... the story is not entirely real.

Yes, I do. Why? Because I lived through that war and heard many similar stories from those who made it home.

Lol. My boyfriend told me that its the biggest pile of lies he's ever seen. I dunno, he's usually right about these things. I don't think any film is historically accurate. History is usually boring and so they like to spice it up. Artistic licence.
