PONTING.
COZ HE CAN HIT THE FIRST BALL HE FACED INTO GAPS.
HE CAN SHINE IN BOTH VERSIONS.

It seems like comparison btw any 2 great players will never end :). Lets analyze these two players on statistics and then say the final verdict. Here it goes....
As a test batsman:
Rahul Dravid :- 9049 run in 176 innings (104 matches) with an average of 58.75.
Ponting: 8792 runs in 175 innings (105 matches) with an average of 58.22.
VERDICT: The figures looks quiet similar starting from number of matches, innings , average and no of runs. So they stand equal. But, if we compare the matches where both have scored more than 50 runs and the result of the match then Ponting is ahead of Dravid.
As a captain:
Ricky ponting has won 22 of the 30 matches (73%). 5 of the remaining 8 were drawn and only 3 lost (10%). Also he has 2970 runs in these 30 matches with an average of 63.21. 11 centuries and 13 half centuries.
Rahul Dravid: Dravid has won 5 matches of 17 (29%). 8 of the remaining were drawn and 4 lost (24%). He has scored 1293 runs in these 17 matches with a average of 51. 72. 3 centuries and 8 half centuries.
VERDICT: Ricky Ponting is way ahead here in all the fields - percentage test wins, runs, average, milestones, etc. I would say he is a better test captain then Rahul Dravid.
ODI:
Dravid: 9537 in 272 innings (293 ODIs) with an average of 40.24 and strike rate of 70.57. 23 centuries and 46 half centuries.
Ponting: 9210 in 246 innings (252 matches) with an average of 42.44 and strike rate of 79.25. 20 centuries and 52 half centuries.
VERDICT: Agains seems like close, but Ricky Ponting is notch ahead of Rahul Dravid. Here also if we see the match won by the team when these guys scored 50 + runs then Ponting is ahead of Dravid.
ODI captain -
Dravid : 45 matches - won 25 lost, lost 18 and 2 NR. Scored 1661 in 45 matches with an average of 44.89 . 2 centuries and 15 half centuries.
Ponting: 121 matches - won 92, lost 22, 2 ties, and 5 NR. Scored 4410 with an average of 43.66. 12 centuries and 24 half centuries.
VERDICT: Statistics says the Ponting is way ahead of Dravid.
Awards:
Dravid -
Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2000
ICC Test Player of the Year 2004
ICC Player of the Year 2004
Ponting:
Allan Border Medal 2004
Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2006
Final Verdict: Both are almost equal from batting point of view. May be, if you want one, Ponting has a upper edge. From all other perspective - as a captain, human being as a cricketer, cricketing mind, etc. - Ponting is better than Dravid.

dont compare a master batsman with a ordinary batsman
reason:
ponting can play in an particular area for example off side and even particular shots like pull shots
were
dravid cant do that

i say ricky ponting because he's got that way of hitting the impossible and is so smooth. but with dravid he is too slow at making runs but can make some killer runs. ponting has got this record of making a 100 in every match he played with bangladesh os south africa....i think.
