I have just started to direct knitwear fashion shoots for a magazine including front covers but there is a conflicting opinion with my colleagues about whether the models should be smiling when they pose. Some think it looks a bit more sophisticated if they don't and that smiles are cheesy, but others think that a smile is friendly and that not smiling is cold. This is both a craft and a fashion magazine so what do you think is best and what kind of look would make you pick a magazine off a shelf?

as an ex model - smiles are normally reserved for fun flirty shoots - non smiling shots are kept for more reserved adult fashion. Any experienced model can "smile with her eyes" - they dont rely on their mouth at all!!! If I can be of any further help dont hesitate to give me a mail!

Knitwear conjours up warmth and cold weather.
Depends on the set, I suppose.
I hate the way some models look hard faced and pouty.
If it's a couple of girls throwing leaves about in an action shoot then snap them smiling.
If it's the usual over the top clinical backdrop, then let them do what they do best. Sulk.
I like smiles - especially for the craft side of the magazine.

Ask your photographer, and whoever you are shooting for what look they want. Most high fashion models don't smile, but it really really depends! If you want a sexy look, no. If you want a flirty look, a half smile, if you want a serious look, no. If you want a fun outgoing friendly look, then yes! I personally like a sultry looking model, but only if it matches what is being advertised. If shes in a hot pink bikini on a beach, she should be smiling! If shes standing in a dirty alley wearing tattered jeans she should be kinda pouty and mean...it depends on the scenery and the model. Good luck!

Get a similar magazine and see what the models in that do.

Most dont do a full on cheesy grin but a slight smile and slighly open lips.

I think the usual explanation for models not smiling is that it distracts from the clothing if they did smile.
Solution? Ugly models! They should ask me, I could smile all I want and all the viewer'd be interested in would be the clothing.
Want my number?

It depends. It depends on what you are modeling, who for, the style, etc..

Best thing to do is ask the photographer. Because he/she knows exactly what they are looking for. If in doubt, don't smile. Most fashion shoots wont want you to. But if you do any advertisements, they might want smiles.

smiling models may distract people from looking at the clothes rather than the smile. the models are there only so people can look at the clothes. Although not smiling is cold, it looks more professional.

you rarely see models smiling in either fashion shoots on on the runway - personally if the smile is natural I find the pic more appealling
depends to a degree on the outfit & want look you want to create

I know what i will say its what all director, editor, photographer stylist and readers etc will want and its be natural..showing how she feels and what is the idea of the project...if it is sensual..romantic or erotic... i don't think that smiles could be wrong in any situation
