you have to dedicate yourself, getting up at the crack of noon and do deep knee power rock squats.

DO NOT apply to X-factor. You will be ridiculed by the rock community. (I know it's not X-factor, but look at Fightstar, they're very much disliked by the Rock community nickname: Sh*testar)
Your band has to write your own music, with very few covers, no legions of writers creating the music you just sing/play.
You need to work hard from the bottom, with no quick schemes, like X-factor etc.
You need to be true to the music first, not the image, and be humble, not cocky.
If you can do all of these, and produce great music, Well done, You're a rock star!

You have to know what it involves.
It would take years of learning an instrument, (if it's bass it wouldn't take as long as guitar or drums would)
Then you would have to find a group of people to play with who are into the same sort of music as you, (cause musical differences can cause havoc in a band, believe me) and keep playing together, it doesn't matter what you play at first, play ABBA if you wish, it doesn't really matter. But play until you are all comfortable playing together as a group.
Then, you can cover some stuff or write your own, but i'll warn you now, don't just go recording it straight away!
Again, you will need to know the song inside out, or else it would be pointless having wrote it. when you can all play it flawlessly, find a decent studio and get recording.
You could probably get a few demo CD's from the studio, send them in to various radio stations (Radio 1, Rock FM, though only at times, and tower FM, though only at times, are the only one's that i can think of that would play rock music)
Or, you could continue to write and record some stuff, it's your choice. You could record a video, it needn't be an expensive one, you could just get a load of old movie clips from your past out and stick them together and no-one would care. Send that in to Kerrang!, Scuzz and MTV2 and voila! Coverage!

lmao...
Its not as simple as it sounds, you have to work hard at it, learn the guitar for starters, get a voice coach if you feel you can sing and learn how to write songs, I don't mean rhyming either...Put yourself about, get involved with people who are interested in forming a band etc...
Put a E.P down on CD and send it off to a few good music publishers with a catchy band name and CD title...oh and the songs have to be good too, catchy and individual...it takes work...
