I think it's partly the lack of control brought on by the slack ethics most people display in "real" life, plus some loneliness. Lonely people want to talk and make connections, but they go into those rooms, and have to hunt pretty hard for a real person in the first place, much less someone that can carry on a good conversation.
It's a sad display of the state of affairs.
I guess the best reason to go in them for me is to practice my story line skills. God knows no one cares whats really going on with anyone else, so might as well work on improvisation of thought and story and the narrative flow.

Wow, what a loaded question. The internet is a "safe" place to explore the imagination and express fantasy or taboo ideas. For various reasons, people feel more inclined to chat about personal issues to strangers because, they are strangers and finding someone who is interested in the same sexual idea is exciting and intoxicating. It is real communication but with faceless or un attainable people. Sex is not over rated in the right circumstances but those seeking the attention of sexual oriented people online should take caution because it can become disruptive to real life when it becomes the focus of sexual expression. I dont know exactly why its so popular. Some are sick predators looking for cheap thrills and some just are missing the truthful healthy communication with their partner. Whatever the reason, just avoid the ones who initiate the sex chat or start a chat room with no people who want that attention but only conversation. I would be willing to participate in that chat room. I have had my own experiences with this issue with my ex and Ive beaten my brain trying to figure out what the hell was misssing in his life and what i did or didnt do that this was going on.
Dont know if this helped but at least know, I understand what your frustration is. Email me if you want to discuss further.

I believe it has been since internet chatting was first introduced to the masses. I observed that during my early days in the chat -- and I wonder if anyone of you once chatted in MTV Chat and was a reg, too. I finally got bored with the repeated sex chats so I lost interest anymore. Now I only chat with the people I have on my messenger list.
I think the reason why sex chat became the most common topic is that, through the chatroom they can freely say what they normally can't say in person, especially about sex. In chatrooms they can abuse their anonymity. Who will ever recognize them anyway in public, except for the people whom they revealed their true identity? Sex chat is indeed stimulating... you can easily release and just babble away your kinky thoughts... make fun of it, talk about your fantasies. People who needs to get away from reality for a short while will definitely pool in it. It's uncontrollable.
The best thing you can do is put them on ignore and open a question or enquiry and see if anyone replies. Or you can jog to another chatroom. Trust me, you can never stop them.

I'm sure there are lots of people who do want a proper conversation but unfortunately there are more who use the internet for sex.
I've never tried to get to know anyone on a chat before because I always presumed it was full of perverts and liars.
Are there not specialist chat rooms for certain topics that you are interested in? Or ones that state 'no perverts'?

I gave up on chat rooms. I never could find anyone who just wanted to talk. Sex is great with the right person, but online? That's kinda hard. I do think that people are more lonely these days. Plus it is easier to say crazy things online, nobody knows who you really are.

It is a sad commentary on our times. With over six billion souls on this planet, there so many lonely and desperate.
When I go into a chat room for conversation, I want to learn about other people and cultures. There are always randy morons accosting me with some of the worst filth I have ever heard.
They are awkward and socially dysfunctional losers who can't get a date on Saturday. They stay home and masturbate to visual aids from the Internet because they are incapable of attracting the opposite sex in real life. They are unable to compete in the arena of romance and sex with normal people.
Like the sick, weak, and lame of the animal kingdom, they should be killed and eaten as food to sustain worthy life.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.

I know, it's so hard to find people just to talk to. I'm not interested in online sex, I'm just looking for someone who can hold an intelligent conversation for more than 5 minutes.

Sex is part of life and civilization has made sex a taboo. So naturally all people seek it discreetly and internet seems to be the most discreet method today therefore you find people talking about sex in the net.

The "Ignore" button is a wonderful thing. If someone talks to you in a manner you don't like, you just hit the button. Until you decide to take that person off of your ignore list, things they type - even if they're in the same room as you - don't appear to you; and they cannot private message you.
