gandhiji used to say every body is equal in the country so why reservation is provided to sc bc candidates, why not judge on the basis of knowledge

Simple. It's all for getting votes. Now the ruling party will give quota to SC/BC . After five years when they come again for election, they will say that we have done so much to rural communities and ask for votes. Even the rural people will think that they have done something benefit for them and vote them. Only we general merit (caste) have to suffer. Gandhiji said many things to make India powerful. But who is following them? Even politicians themselves are indulged in all types of unscrpulous activities.

The benefits of the reservation do not go to all SC/STs. It goes to a handfull of people in whose family, the cats and dogs are also getting the benefit. Even after about 60 years of independance and reservation, this lot could not be brought up and more than 90% of the SC/STs are still live like beasts because of our 'great' political system. Due to 'special care' for the so called high level down-troden in the govt. system, the efficiency of the Govt. is at the lowest in our country. Just imagin, Indians are considered at top level in the renowned world organisations where as in India they cannot get a clerical job in Govt. organisation.

It is basically against the spirit of the constitution of India to provide reservation even after the expiry of time limit of ten years fixed by the makers of constitution.
Basic idea was to uplift the lives of downtrodden. But here the politicians made it a weapon to come to the power. There is no harm in giving some reservations to the poors strictly on merits, be it from upper castes also. Keep away this creamy layer out of reach of this reservation sytem.
So in order to honor the constitutin in real sense, stop reservation on caste basis otherwise we will fell in a deep well of caste war.

Of course one of the reasons is associated with vote banks of dirty politicians.
But some other facts need to be considered while answering this question:
1.Most of the SC's and ST's are economically poor.
2.Hereditary is an important factor.For centuries they were kept away from education.This makes the present generation intelluctually unequal.

Simple. SC/BCs' are the vote banks and they fully excercise there right sufrage.
