the sensor on an old floodlight seems not to pick up anything. any ideas?

From my experience: These sensors have all kinds of adjustment knobs (potentiometers) and little switches hidden underneath, in order to set sensitivity, range, daylight recognition, and some functions. These are the things that usually fail first, after some time outdoors (humidity).
An electronics technician could probably fix that, but it would cost more than buying a replacement sensor. If your sensor is separate from the actual light, you can buy any IR sensor for outdoor spotlights. If it is integrated into the light, then scrap it....

sensor might be pointing in wrong direction,ther might be No mains voltage,Globe might be faulty, also if you have cieling fan switch on same circuit as floodlight hope this helps

What I do is go to the hardware store and buy a new one for way less than a replacement part.
Two screws hold it up a couple of wire nuts to work on and you have a whole new deal!
