China or India. All powerful nations self destruct eventually. I think America becoming a massive global influence has damaged itself. Everyone hates Americans - when in fact they are good people. Just a few bad eggs spoiling the food. India and China will maybe become very strong, if they don't poison themselves with their own pollution first.

Next?
In 20 years or 200?
On a short term base USA will keep his status.
One candidate can be Europe as a Federation or some thing similar.
On a long term base, hundreds, we have to ask a predictor, if you can find one.
For this question, asked a thousand times, China comes always on top of the list.
But China still has a huge amount of internal problems to solve. Do you know that only a little more of 50% of all Chinese can speak the official language of the country?

The best answer is whomever the majority of people allow to be the next superpower. Being a superpower is not about having a mighty military but rather having a "superpower vision" of the world. Believe it or not, America would have no superpower status if it was not revered around the world for its prosperity, human rights, and freedom. America's military adds nothing to its superpower status or prestige. Its all about its 'soul' ! To be a true superpower you must have a super soul and America has that.

For how long, we don't know!?

In reference to the gun, I don't feel America will self destruct. In reference to another scenario, it may be very possible we shall experience economic, political, or social chaos. As for who would be the next superpower; there could be many countries vying for that position! Bear in mind a true superpower is not only materially strong, it also uses it's ppl to educate, ppl to teach technology, as well as it's money and it's other resources to help rebuild and provide for lesser developed nations. Contrary to the popular opinion we (the US) only have war-mongers and manipulating self-serving zealots doing things, we also have ppl from Universities and other organizations doing medical, manufacturing, environmental and farm and husbandry based projects throughout the world. The lesser developed world. Who will take on that burden? Who knows?!

The age of the superpower (in the traditional sense) will be over as the economies of other countries catch up with America.

In a globalised, consumer led, world the size of your nuclear arsenal will become irrelevant. The new superpowers will be the multinational corporations that we already find are bigger than many national economies.

With environmental and social issues becoming ever more important maybe we will be able to look forward to more ethical corporate superpowers and a brighter tomorrow if as consumers we each make ethical decisions

...please note I said MAYBE!

I think that now Superman has made a come back, he will take over the world, flying about and zapping all countries that try to defeat him with those lasers from his eyes.

Seen as that is very unlikely and a stupid answer I will settle for China as well. I think they have been building a grand plan for world domination for several years now.

We believe that China would be the next "super-power". There are sooo many people there, and they already have a very long history of hard work and diligence to begin with. Not to mention that they do have nucleur capabilities. We also believe that they would easily be able to pursuade the Muslem world to join forces to futher establish the arrmegeden to follow... uneducated guess but hmmm

China is an emerging power that could be the next big superpower. Most industries are being outsourced to China for manufacturering and assembly.
