A canoe does not have any covered deck. A Kayak has bow and stern covered. It can be totally covered with skirts for the occupants. A kayak is paddled with a double ended paddle, a canoe is paddled with a one ended paddle. Some kayaks for the ocean are actually a solid plastic piece that you sit on and not in. In a canoe you are supposed to kneel on the bottom. In a kayak you sit in a seat on the cockpit sole.

A canoe has seats that hold more than one person and is paddled with only one paddle on either side of the boat.The center of gravity is higher and it has a greater chance of tipping from sudden movements;a kayak has the seat in the bottom of the boat attached to the base,center of gravity is lower and it is easier to balance.Also, there are two paddles that connect to each other one perpendicular to the other,and rowing is totally different.there are several types of kayaks.2 most noticeable are the long skinny type,called sea kayaks,and the wide short type,primarily used for white water.

Canoe is designed to be rowed over calm and peaceful waters. A kayak is designed to be able to be used in rough fast flowing waters such as rapids or ocean waves. Also when a canoe capsizes, it can't be flipped back up, while skillful kayakers can easily flip up a kayak and continue their activity.

a canoe is aopen vessel that can accomidate more than one passenger a kayak is a one person vessel where the person is sealed into the kayak w/ a (I think they snap) rubber type closure(sp).....also kayaks are made from rougher waters & more extreme sporting where as a canoe is for paddleing and more gentle waters
