Check To See If It Has A Wireless Modem, Or Wi-Fi...Then It Will Work With Your Wireless Connection At Home.

It needs to either have a wireless connection built in (which will probably be advertised as Wi-Fi) or have a suitable expansion port. The most common type are PCMCIA cards, which slot into the side of laptops, but USB adapters are also available (just not entirely convenient for a portable PC). So obviously the built in option is the most convenient way to go.

You will see numbers like 802.11b and 802.11g. 'G' is the latest standard but is backwards compatible with 'B'. So you don't have to worrying about compatibility between your existing wireless network and the laptop you are buying.

So long as it has a free PCMCIA slot you will be fine, and can fit whichever speed card you want.

Don't feel you have to buy one with wireless built in. Eventually whatever is 'built in' is superseded so you would end up switching it off in favour of a PCMCIA card anyway!

This also means that you are free to follow your choice of operating systems. Some people like a choice of windows / linux, and finding drivers can be a real issue for built in kit. So keep your options open and you will end up paying less.

You can always use a wireless dongle anyway so it doesn't need to be built in.
