If I start taking them today when will I be able to have safe sex? Can I buy them in any pharmacy or do I need to get a doctor's prescribtion? I'm from UK.

To be on the safe side, most US manufacturers recommend 45 days from the onset of taking birth control pills before engaging in sex. I do not know about the procedures in the UK, but many countries allow you to buy them directly from the pharmacist.

Good luck to you.

Some pill inserts tell you that you are protected from pregnancy after taking the pill correctly for seven days, although my opinion is that you should use backup contraception for the first cycle just to be sure. Of course the pill does not protect you against any sexually transmitted infections, so you will still need to use condoms unless you and your partner(s) have recently tested negative for STD's. Here in the US the pill is available only with a prescription. You can call a local clinic to ask if that is the case there as well.

I live in the U.S. so I can't comment on contraception pills and doctors' prescriptions in the U.K., but I should think that you'd need a prescription because hormones have an effect on many parts of the body, and a doctor would need to be sure you're a good candidate for such hormones.

As for safe sex, you need to keep practicing safe sex after you start taking contraceptive pills. You probably already know this; I couldn't tell from your question. As you know, contraceptive pills have no protective effect from sexually transmitted diseases. You still need to use condoms.

Good luck.
