Anthony Hopkins has the benefit of being classically trained. English actors on the whole are better than American actors--especially since acting prettymuch was born in England. Al Pacino usually plays to type: a mean, hard-edged, ruff-and-gruff, angry dude. But Anthony Hopkins could play a tree and you'd believe it.

Anthony Hopkines's better as an actor I guess, except Al Pasino in God Father, if I'm not mistaken. Just superb, both, so real, so natural.

Both are really clever and careful in choosing their roles. Pacino however can portray a wider gradient of feelings in one role i.e he can be a caring villain or a mean good guy. The classy nature of Hopkins on the other hand is reflected on the consistency of character profile that he delivers. He is committed to live inside a character's profile and convey his dominant feelings with excellence, that's why he is so believable. The thing that is best about these 2 is that they really know themselves real good, that's why you cannot imagine one of them substituting the other in one of their roles.

Pacino is the best! We can let him off for Godfather III. Hopkins has made some pretty dire films too, lets be honest - The Mask of Zorro? Hannibal, anyone?

I have to say that the first one you mentionned is fit only to play out an extrovert version of his one sided neurosis, whereas the second has displayed a much more diverse character portfolio.. nevertheless I came to a personnal conclusion not to admire actors.. for the most part they're much less than what we think of them
