Take an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) course over a weekend...you get classroom time and riding time. When you pass that, you can take the card they give you to your local DMV and get the motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license without further testing (written or skills).

The course is worth taking...in fact, I think an abbreviated version of it should be mandatory for everyone (even non-bike riders) to help people who drive only automobiles become more aware of motorcycle riders and how differently our vehicles operate and react. You have more respect for bikes and their operators after taking that class.

In the United States, the best way to get a license is through a training course. They take place over a weekend, and consist of both talks and videos about safety plus a lot of riding exercises in a relatively safe environment. The two easiest to find ones are the MSF and Harley Rider's Edge. Check with your local DMV to see what's approved in your state.

Go down to your DMV, get the guide for the written test, study it, and pass the written test to get the permit. Then, you have to either take your state's riding test on a bike on the little course at the DMV. In some states, if not all, you can take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation riding class and if you pass it, you not only get a break on insurance it also counts as passing the DMV riding test. The class lasts 4 hours a day for two weekends.

Go to same place you get regular drivers license.
There is a seperate book you have to read.
Take the riders test after the written one.
I would encourage you to look at local bike shops, they offer rider training courses for about 150$ Which also gets you a discount on your insurance, and pays for itself.
