The book it was taken from was called 'A beautiful Mind' so actually the movie just copied it. She (the author) called it that because although he was mentally ill and saw people who were not there, he still had an amazing mind and amazing control over it (I mean he did live most of his life knowing that the four or five people he saw and who yacked at him all the time were not real) which enabled him to go on and continue studies and win many awards.

Well 'cause the movie is about John Forbes Nash Jr. who from the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, experiences it all. A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self-discovery once he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over this tragedy, and finally, late in life, received the Nobel Prize. So the bottom line being, he was a man of great intelligence and he didn't let schizophrenia get the better of him.....

Hence the name - A Beautiful Mind - referring directly to the intelligence and persistant brain of John Forbes Nash Jr.

Well, there were lots of characters in the mind of John Nash, all of them were nice, apparently. And isn't it beautiful never to be alone? Certainly, inside his mind he lived a wonderful life.

Why 'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' mentioned a spotless mind though, is a tougher one to crack.

You got me there. I wondered the same thing.
If I remember correctly, he did not have much of a mind, did he? Russel Crowe played the lead, and he played it well. He was not even nominated for anything, guess the academy was mad at him that year.
