Follow the crowd at lunchtime and see where most of them go. You can pick out the overt people fairly easily and being new gives you a chance to ask advise on how things work with that company. Keep a little distance but sound out several people on things before finding a group to hook up with.

What kind of company is it? Smile and nod. Bring up a subject that everyone will relate. Football or any sport is usually a good way to start a conversation at the water cooler. Ma bey a TV show or something in general in the news. Once you ask a general question you can introduce yourself.

It's better not to make lots of friends.
Friends should be chosen very carefully, cause once you choose someone and he is not a good guy, he might put you in problems such as drugs etc...
check them out while they are talking to eachother and make the one's you think they are good for you.
