After taking the AC or serpentine belt off to inspect, why is it recommended that you put the belts in the same direction as before? I took the AC belt off on my car to inspect and it was in very good condition so I put it back on but I didn't know which way it was on before so I just put it on. Will it break if I put it on the other way? Thanks.

I mean the turning direction of the belt.

In theory the belt will develop a wear pattern as it's being used, so reversing the belt will imprint a second pattern on the belt and drastically reduce the life of the belt.

In reality if the belt is less than two years old it shouldn't make any difference at all because the rubber is still pliable and the reinforcement strands haven't broken.

yes chances are that if you put it on the wrong way it will break because the different layers in the belt travel and when you change the direction these layers start to separate and then eventually break, so i would get one and put it in the trunk for safe keeping.
