Tinkerbell is right.

According to his story, the Buddha was a prince before he became who he is. He wore heavy expensive jewelry back in those days. The weight of the jewelry stretched his earlobes.

The length of the earlobes represents the wisdom of the bearer. Statues of disciples of Buddha (Lohan) also have long earlobes (though not as long) and you can touch the earlobes on all these statues to try and gain wisdom yourself.
As for the origin, I'm only guessing, but age is also a sign of wisdom and ears continue to grow throughout life so may have become a symbol of wisdom. Doesn't explain why big noses aren't also included.
