San Francisco, for it is the last bastion of hope in this nation. It's forward-thinking and innovative attitude are the envy of the state. It is a beautiful city with many places to walk and awe at the city's beauty. Plus it has culture and a history. A city known round the world. Definitely not evil, grimy, or shady like the hell child, Los Angeles.
However, when I prefer to live the quiet life, I would like to be in my little Shire (plus where I attend UCSB), Santa Barbara. Now there is the peaceful life.

San Diego is my hometown. I was raised there. But it is now way too expensive and far too crowded. It is no longer the city I grew up in. It's absolutely beautiful though. North County is especially nice if you like smaller beachy communities. Unfortunately wages have not kept up with the cost of living and rents are ridiculous, which is why I don't live there any more. Orange County is gorgeous, even more crowded and even more expensive. It is more exclusive and there is a terrible housing shortage there. California gets more expensive as you move up the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. LA is hell. I was born there. It is full of fake, plastic people and wannabes. Evrybody there seems to want to be in show business. If that is what you want to do then LA is place to go get in line. It does have lots of pockets of cool stuff and fun things to do but you can turn a corner and whoa. I go there to shop and visit. That's all. It's ugly, crowded, dirty, polluted and the traffic is terrible. There are days when the air is so bad that warnings have to be issued for people with any respiratory problems not to go outside. On those days you can see the brown smog in the air. That's just scary. North of LA County, the Grapevine, all agricultural, farm land, Bakersfield, Fresno, kind of hickish. Now Northern California is where its at. San Francisco is my favorite city in the entire world even if I can't afford to live there. It's relatively small. And still not too terribly crowded because there is a lack of affordable housing. It's absolutely the coolest, friendliest city in California (of course California cities are not friendly). The weather is cool. The bay is beautiful. It's laid back, hip, funky, there's Golden Gate Park, the Haight, Berkeley... San Francisco is the best.

San Francisco is the most progressive culturally and politically and is drawing hordes of young people, but I prefer the Monterey peninsula: Monterey and Carmel, where there is great natural beauty and a strong arts community.
