Every country and culture has certain spellings, phrases and words that mean the exact same thing somewhere else. Example: Mum and Mom, Lou and Bathroom...those are both from England/Canada. Which one's do you know of?

sorry - I have a friend Lou... I think you mean 'loo', which technically is the porcelin rather than the whole room it occupies - and hence not something that Americans like to talk of.

Some of the differences in spelling between American and the rest of the English speaking world is that you have had some progressive politicians in your past who have 'rationalised' the language. Like taken the 'U' from colour.

I personally think that the American spellings work well in most cases.

Some others - like MOM and MUM show a difference in pronounciation.

One of my favourite weird phrases that do not translate well... is 'f a g' - which here in Australia now means both 'a gay man' and the older meaning of 'a cigarette'. So if you hear an Australian say they are 'going out for a f a g' - it might not mean what you first think.
