Will you be able to live if you cancel ?
Tax credits are a basic entitlement and you get
them for working, so they should not affect your
immigration status.
You can ask the Citizens Advice Bureau for help and
you can ask at the tax office as well.
Everyone understands life in UK is very unfair on
working people, only landlords have it easy !
So ask for advice and make an informed decision !
Good luck to you !
Thank you for helping support the UK economy because
you are working in UK and paying so much for everything !
Welcome !

For UK Resident:
In order to re-evaluate your tax credits, you might need to fill in a couple of forms and quite possibly report any types of income that you have to HMRC:
About Tax credits in general:
http://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/Qualify/WhatAreTaxCredits.aspx
Check if you qualify:
http://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/Qualify/DIQHousehold.aspx
As for residency – depending on you’re your situation. Tax credits are usually regarded differently than benefits. I know that the IND is very strict about claiming benefits, but I don’t believe it is as strict about tax benefits.
Tax benefits are there to help you support yourself with your current income, depending on the amount of work you do and the amount of tax you pay. Since you are paying for your own expenses, and not claiming money from public funds, you do believe you are allowed tax credits.
To be on the safe side, you can contact CAB:
http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/getadvice.htm
Or get CAB advice online:
http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_rights/immigration.htm
Good luck!
