Ramayana - story of prince Ram ("Ram - Ayana" - literally narration of story of prince Ram) was written by Rishi Valmiki (Rishi is not part of the name - just a title for a learned researcher in ancient India) - so if you just ask for the name,
it was Valmiki.

Valmiki was the court Rishi of Ram's father Dashrath, and Ram along with his 3 brothers studied in his school (GuruKul). After Sita, Ram's wife was exiled - she went and stayed in Rishi Valmiki's ashram.

I saw some answers as Ved-Vyas - which are wrong, Ved-Vyas wrote Mahabharta. I also saw some references to Ganesha, which are also wrong Ganesh has nothing to do with Ramayana, however it is said that he dictated "Mahabharta", another Indian Epic. I also see a mention of Kabir - Das for Hindi Ramayana, which is also wrong, there is no Hindi Ramayana, there is a book "Ram Charitra Manas" written in a dialect of Hindi by Tulsi-Das. It is true that Ramayana was written in Sanskrit.

The Ramayana is attributed to the poet Valmiki, and is a central part of Hindu scripture. Valmiki's Ramayana is the oldest and most widely read version of the epic, and the text currently read today has come down through the ages in two regional versions: one from the north of India, and another from the south. There is much speculation on whether or not it was indeed Valmiki who wrote the first and last chapters of the Ramayana due to differences in style and certain contradictions, but many experts agree that they are still an important part of the work regardless of such complications.
