Why does a 90kDA protein emerges first compared to a 40kDA protein from a gel filtration column?

Smaller proteins can travel through the internal mesh of the beads and thus they have to follow a much longer path to the "exit" of the column. Bigger proteins just move in the space in between the beads so they reach the "exit" faster.
