I bought a stand alone A/C unit this summer - was only £200 and that cools a large bedroom - in fact because it's portable we even carried it downstairs & used it on a few days in the sitting room. Also, they do not require any professional installation.
Delivery was next day & hubby was so impressed he bought a couple for the offices at work. Web site is listed below - there is even a calculator to work out what BTU you need & which units are best suited to your application - I highly recommend these people.

It would be difficult, but possible. When I started with VW in 1980, the dealership I was at was installing aftermarket a/c in air cooled VW's of all sorts... The kits were a custom fit design from Fridgking, they were making kits for Vanagons, buses, type III's, and Beetles. They were a pain in the rear to install, but they did fit under the engine cover without modification to the lid. Another company, DPD air also made kits for the Beetle, but both DPD and Fridgking are now out of business. The issue today is that you'd have to have custom brackets made to mount the compressor; as I remember, the Fridgking kit also had a special sized compressor to fit the engine and custom designed mounting brackets. To fit an a/c kit today, everything in the engine compartment would have to be custom made; even the compressor (unless you could find an old fridgking compressor somewhere) mounting would be tricky given the size and shape of todays a/c compressors. In addition, the condensor would have to probably be mounted underneath the vehicle towards the frnt to insure enough air flow, plus clearance for the blower assist fan to prevent excessive heat build up. You might get lucky and find a used VW with the aftermarket a/c kit on it. Even if it doesn't work, the brackets and compressor are very valuable and would save considerable expense, even if the compressor requires an overhaul... Two other issues also arise if you add a/c to a air cooled Beetle; oil temperatures will rise a lot, you'll need an auxilary oil cooler and perhaps a fan assist for it... you want avoid overheating the engine and causing it to fail.... and also it will drain a lot of horsepower from the vehicle. I don't remember far enough back, but I think even VW offered a dealership installed a/c kit for the fuel injected Beetle for a while.... Expect to spend at least $1500 or more (probably more, depending upon the hourly rate to custom design and make parts for your vehicle).. . You might be able to contact a company like classic auto air, for help and advice on this issue. But, like I said above, its not going to be cheap! I would leave it as it is, or expect to spend a lot of money to do this. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Rule of thumb is 500 sq. ft needs 1 ton of A/C
A 3 ton about 4500
A 5 ton about 6000.
This depends on the efficiency, make of unit and local labor cost.
Thats based on a freon type unit. There are other types out there such as a water fridge. These are only cost worthy if you live in a very hot climate. Then the money gets steep.
Good Luck

It all depends on how much work is needed to be done? Do you have ductwork, do you have a furnace that is ac ready? If your furnace is old (10-15yrs) you may want to replace that at this time because it will only add a little more on price however you will have a new warranty and equipment that matches work better together. Square footage is how they size hvac systems. My rule is take your square footage and divide by 400 for a poorly insulated house, 500 for a medium, and 600 for a well insulated house. I would have at least three contractors bid and take the best price for the best equipment. Ask them for references, pics of previous jobs, and what equipment they offer for the price. After that do some research on the equipment. Some name brands are tempstar, heil, carrier, bryant, and trane.

it really does depend on what system you want to install... A single unit per room is going to set you back between £120 and £1000 depending on the units (you can pick up a basic water cooler type for about £40 and they need very little installation, the other end is the single room air conditioners which are free standing which you can pick up for about £200) or you could go for a complete system, with external chillers and interall fan systems, and the cost will depend on the size of the chillers and where you want them located......

I have installed a combination AC and furnace on a couple of houses your size. Including ductwork the cost was about $4000.

The cost to the environment is huge, they contribute towards global warming, so it's a bit of a Catch 22 situation.

an easy way to calculate although not an axact way considering many variables would be take the sq. footage of the house and find out how much air would be needed by the following figures
400 sq. ft. needs approx. 1 ton of air assuming you have the average ins. amount of glass and it is only one story . and figure around $1200.00 per ton . ex. 1800 sq ft. =4 1/2 tons of air x $1200.00 per ton =$5400.00 although i stress there are many variables.
