I bought a brand new Mazda in 2004. Dealer guaranteed 48 months or 50000 miles. Freeway wind blew off and torn the bumper. Dealer refused to honor their guarantee, what should I do?

That must have been some wind!!! Physical damage is not covered by any manufacturers warranty. You are out of luck.

Sorry about your troubles. Firstly get the dealers comments in the form of a written report. Then submit the report to the regional representative of Mazda or the head office in Irvine CA. - that's assuming you're in the states. And exactly which model and year car is it? Front or rear bumper (people tend to call both bumpers). Can you describe the condition at the point of separation - where the connectors broken, pulled out of place etc ? That will help to determine whether it was a product defect or not.
And what advice did the dealer give you - go some where else, the manufacturer doesn't cover it, you broke it you fix it, it's going to cost yer... ?
The manufacturer would be interested in knowing more about a complaint like yours - the vehicle mis-hap and the dealer comments (especially if they were against manufacturer's protocol).

Did you put more than 50,000 miles on the car? If so, the warranty is no longer valid and the dealer did the right thing.

If the warranty is still in force, find other people who had the same thing happen to them. If so, call Mazda and complain about the bumpers blowing off during wind. Use Mazda as leverage against the dealer, not you against the dealer.

If you read the warranty, the warranty doesn't cover acts of god. that is why the dealer denied you as he has figured it was an act of god or due to carelessness (accident) that the bumper fell off.

Only form of recorse would be to contact Mazda as someone said and let them make the determination if it was a factory defect or something else. having the old bumper will be needed of course.... but you also better not have had any accidents even parking lot scrapes with the bumper or they will deny it... best bet after contacting Mazda and getting nowheres (but give them some time to respond as they may send a rep out or send you to another dealer for furthur inspection) is to call your insurance company and let them pay for it and let them fight it out for you, if they have evidence of defect after inspecting it.

Well as a registered dearler I can tell you that im always truthfull in on way I can help you is: you should take them to a small claims court and bring your contract & also take photos of your vehicle and where the wind blew off your bumper, you know new cars do have allot of defects! and present this to the court and you have nothing to loose but only gain when you leave the court...: ) goodluck

This is not an answer - but a question to the dealership guy...

Is there a known defect in the bumper that would make it fly off in a bad wind? Have there been others on record that this has happened to?

THis damage is not covered in the warranty. The warrany only covers items that the manufacturer ca screw up . the wind taking the bubmer off Hmmm if you can prove it was poor workmanship after 2-3 years go to the regional level and go into arbitration....State your case but be ready to prove it was prro workmanship not the wall you hit... a year ago.

Does your local television news station have a segment where people can call in with this type of stuff? Businesses, especially car dealerships (they always get a bad rap; wonder why???), hate bad publicity.
IF you have one, you can also contact your local Better Business Bureau.
You can take them to small claims court. A lawyer wouldn't be worth it as they cost too much (and they're another "joke"!)

Mazda has a very good customer service. Call them directly and talk about this. Dealers bend over backwards if they get yelled from HQ ...

I would file a lawsuit with your local courthouse, against that company. That mazda company needs to be taught a lesson. also 'd report them to the Better Business Bureau. Also you could file a lawsuit and have your case heard on Judge Judy or on Judge Joe Brown tv show

It's time for you to get a Chevy... You can't go wrong with a Chevy
