Napoleon I Bonaparte, Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Mediator of the Swiss Confederation and Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine (15 August 1769 Р5 May 1821) was a general of the French Revolution; the ruler of France as First Consul (Premier Consul) of the French Republic from 11 November 1799 to 18 May 1804; then Emperor of the French (Empereur des Fran̤ais) under the name Napoleon I from 18 May 1804 to 6 April 1814; and briefly restored as Emperor from 20 March to 22 June 1815.

Napoleon is generally regarded by both admirers and detractors as one of the greatest military geniuses of all time. Some consider him to be a cruel tyrant, responsible for war and sowing the seeds for future World Wars.

Napoleon Bonaparte commonly was simply known as Napoleon. He was the first emporer of France. The French revolution overthrew the monarchy, and Napoleon was one of the generals considered a hero of the revolution. Later he was asked to be Emporer of France, and he accepted, to the horror of some of the Frenchmen, who had been fighting for democracy. He set out to conquer Europe, and made it as far as Russia before being turned back by the Russian winter, and the scorched Earth policy of the Russian peasants. Eventually, he was overthrown by a joint effort of many European nations. He was exiled to the island of Elba, but escaped and again marched on Paris. He was so popular that many soldiers who were sent out to fight him instead defected to his side. He again was exiled, this time to the tiny island St. Helena, where he died.
