The game you're thinking of involved Randy Johnson hitting a bird with his pitch, but it wasn't a strike. According to something I read on mlb.com, the pitch did not count. Because the bird interfered and there's no rule on such an incident, the only fair thing for the umpires to do was to do the pitch over.
