I don't think I have insomnia but there's sometimes when I don't sleep for over 2-3 days due to working and my personal life. I don't know if insomnia can come and go but if it can, I don't think mine is serious.

As a serious insomniac who found sleeping pills not helpful, I did find that learning how to think from the best sleepers is the answer. The best sleepers are, of course, little kids. I began to watch little kids, how they relate and think. I learned that I needed to lighten up, I was too serious. You need to watch little kids and start thinking like they do: admire them, spend time with kids; learn lots of jokes and joke around like kids do; spend time with adults who are "Otters", lighthearted types (about 20% of adults are this type). Learn one new joke a week and keep a file of jokes (e.g., Readers Digest "Laughter the best medicine" section). Spend time with dogs--kids love dogs. And find cute picures of puppies to look at from time to time. Like things kids like and you will become more lighthearted and sleep better, like kids do. Adults tend to be way too uptight. Spend time with little kids in your neighborhood, get on your knee and ask them questions about what they like to do. Spend time with teenagers, as they are still kids and ask what they like to do and listen to them talk--they are great sleepers! Take a kid out for ice cream--often. Be a kid youself and enjoy ice cream while you watch a kid have a blast. I often take my kids out for ice cream just to enjoy watching them and I simply sleep way better than drugs could ever do. Listen to tapes of funny people like Zig Ziglar, whose positive speeches are filled with funny jokes. To sleep, the key is to become like a kid; kids are constantly joking. Try out gags on family and friends. I buy gags like spilled nail polish to put on the floor and my wife flips out; we all laugh. Do that to sleep better. Read children's books: my favorite is, "Jethro Byrd, Fairy Child" by Bob Grahm (kids book). I often read that before bed and I sleep well. I used to be so bad an insomniac an alarmed surgeon could not put me under with drugs. Now I fall to sleep easily at night and go back to sleep if I awaken. Watch kids movies like "Finding Nemo" or Shreck and allow your humor / joy threshold to go down. This happens as you become more childlike and sleep better--it is a fun process! You start laughing more easily and just have more fun. Adults are way too uptight and serious, and that is why they can't sleep. Also, enjoy the hobbies you had as a good sleeping teenager: Did you listen to rock and roll? Listen to that same music again. Did you do other hobbies like fish, etc? Do those things again and remember how good you felt in those times. Adults just don't have fun very well. We need to. Please know this process of becoming like a little child and sleeping that well takes time. Just like losing weight takes months, this does to. But the difference is this approach should be enjoyable, whereas losing weight is not.
