We gradually weaned my little guy off when he was two. We first only let him have it when he was in his room, then only at bedtime. Finally we wrapped up the pacifier and gave it to our friends' new baby as a gift (they obviously didn't let the baby use it but played along for our child's sake). Worked like a charm.

My mom took mine away when I cut my first tooth. My grandmother who is a doctor said if kids use a pacifier when they have teeth it could mess them up. I guess it worked because I never had to wear braces.

Gently ween the child daily from it. Give it to him not when he's crying but at specific times during the day. Reduce the amount of time each day until your child has reached a comfortable level then hide them or throw them out.

They are disgusting, unhygienic objects that should never be allowed near any child. My wife and I brought up two children without them, we had no problems and they are now healthy, happy adults. Now is the best time to stop. Going "cold turkey" is the best system, it is noisy for a week or so but it worth it.

as soon as the baby stops teething. bear in mind that you should prevent your baby sucking its thumb once you ween it off the pacifier as it affects their teeth later in life.
