i've had that transmission in my '67 chevelle for about six years. of course, it was built strong before i put it in, but clean dexron 2, or 3 is all you need. when i say clean, i mean service trans every six monthes if you can. and don't let the level get low!!
this is actually MORE important than fluid choice: the 700r4 has a cable that comes up and attaches to the throttle linkage. it has its own special adjustment and it must stay adjusted as accurately as possible. without question. it's called a throttle valve cable and itliterally controls how much fluid pressure is applied during shifts,and to keep it in gear without slippage.
don't let a buddy mess with it no matter how smart he claims to be. unless you like buying new transmissions when shouldn't need to.

most of gm trans use dextron and if you have and 82 you can use dextron II or dextron III either one is sufficient.
