I was a volunteer fireman for 10 years. We never got paid, in fact we had to spend our own money on some things & spend time raising money for some things we needed.

Does this count?

I am not saying this for myself, but for ALL volunteers out there, in ALL countries -

Give'em a smile & say thanks every now & then.

I dread the day when I will have to do a selfless act, a selfless act - by definition - is one which you do against your best judgment and/or against your self interest. Calling a callous, thoughtless, cruel act, done without any thought about consequences - a selfish act - is like calling a sadistic gang rape -sex! That - is perverted sex, or rather a mindless or selfless act with no trace of self in it - only group madness and mob thinking. selfishness is the most essential, and wonderful quality of a human being, one that allows the human race to survive, and to progress. The only person who profess selflessness to you is one who wants to exploit you; beware of such people and when they approach you; run for your life.I have done a lot of deeds that a lot of people called selfless deeds, but all of them I did because I liked to do it, and because I wanted to do it, and because my personal philosophy, and beliefs demanded it.

I used to give to the United Way. Then, after hearing that all the money i give doesn't get to the actual charity, i stopped it. It was coming out every week from my paycheck. I am not going to stop giving to charity, though. I will find another charity, which has a better ability to distribute whatever i give to the people who need it most. This is a sad world, where our fellow humans DO need help from time to time. When i was younger, our family had some very hard times, and relied on the Salvation Army. They came through! I don't know if they have a way for funding through paychecks, but i will check into it. I may have found a new charity to give to.

My job working with poor children for very little pay is 'selfless'...but I wouldn't trade it for an easier or better paying job that didn't involve children.

I rehabilitate wild orphaned rabbits. They're almost always babies who were abandoned, lost their mother (usually due to humans or pets), or sometimes were even attacked by outdoor pets like dogs and cats. I medicate them if it's necessary, feed them (by syringe, or if they won't take it that way, by tube), and then set them free once their bunny hormones kick in and they become wild. Contact with wild baby bunnies doesn't tame them... They'll hate me no matter what in the end! But they're so damn cute.

i got up at 3:30 am to go to the hospital to be with my sister-in-law when she gave birth to her youngest son. she was scheduled for her first c-section, and her and her husband were really nervous. i stayed with them until they took her into surgery. i didnt really do anything. i just stayed and talked with them. but later she told me how much help i was to them at that time. i was so glad that i was able to help them in their time of need.
