Humans have herd instincts. Take a human away from other humans and see what happens. I've seen lots of reports, studys, and shows on just this.

A little bit of both, I mean we're not all ONE big herd, look at our wars, racism, apartheid, etc. We really don't get along when we're different. We're more like a tribal species, where we join together with people who we share common physical traits with. That's why you see people of same color, religion, etc. working together. We're similar to a herd, because when it is dark, we flock together instead of standing on the side. But we're also solitary, because we believe in our personal freedoms and who we are as a unique addition to our society and species.

So we're solitary in a way as to our own personal ideals and thoughts.
But when it comes to ideas, technology, money, food, and shelter, we think more like a herd and try to help each other out when there is a visible threat.

Well we need human interaction for the first year our life at least.

If human babies do not get other human contact, i.e. closely held and other nurturing aspects, they will die. It has been seen it Romanian orphanages. They can be feed and the basic survival needs met, but without some human contact they will die by the age of 2. This was a shocker! but it was rarely documented before this was observed.

But after a good foundation. We probably don't "need" it for survival. I think it becomes more of a "want" We seem to be more healthier, happier, and satisfied in the company of like kind.

Humans have been termed as 'social animals'.. nevertehless, it is my personnal opinion that there is a very strong orientation of humans towards solitary experiences, regardless of degree the social involvement..
