Yes. There are at least two sites that hold all the information that has ever been on the internet or it's precursors. And that includes any information on your computer a cookie picked up and transferred.

Servers are just glorified hard disks...so everything on the internet is already being stored on "harddisk like devices".

We could switch the whole thing to one big central hub of hard disks, but then there would be connection issues depending on where you are in the world. The whole point of seperating them is to allow you to connect quicker - I effectively connect with London, whereas it would take longer to connect with Washington etc. If all the servers were in London, people in america and china would find that their connection grinds to a halt....and vice versa.

Backing up is a whoooole different ball game though. As mentioned previously, the internet is dynamic...ie. its ever changing. As I type this I am changing one little part of the net...as are millions of people around the world on different websites. So as its not possible for us to simply take an "instant snapshot" of the net, it would be impossible to back up.

Hope that answers your question!

You can back it up on a really big harddisk - it will accurate only it was backed up. But the internet is a dynamic and it won't 'exist' on the hard disk then.

It is rumoured that Google does have periodic backups of the internet stored in a few locations around the world.

The whole internet is already held on hard disks. The servers that serve internet pages have hard disks on which the data is held.

Not centrally, like you're probably talking about. It's too big and changes too often.
