It is strange how many great thinkers failed to understand woman as an equal human being. Aristotle, for example, different from Plato, did not consider woman as free, equal and independent being. It was a spirit of the Ancient Greece that slaves, children and women were the property of their male owner, having no right for decide about their lives, no right for vote and take part in political and public life. Among these three groups, women were the most disadvantaged because children could grow up and if they were boys, they would certainly achieve the status of a free citizen of the polis. If they were slaves, there was an opportunity for them to set free if their owner finds it appropriate (if they show some good skills and virtues, or something). But, if they were women, none of these opportunities did not exist for them. As little girls, they had a status of an immature child, and later, they were obliged to get married and became a property of their husband.

Aristotle, great political thinker, also thought about women as politically immature, dependent beings. His theory of virtue for example, excluded women. It is not for woman to be brave, clever or witted…

If you ask me what I think about his concept, of course I am not amazed . Since he gave us some great ideas about democracy, political life, ethics, ideas that are still very live and actual, his ideas about women are not much different from any of ignorant. I can explain it, as he was a man of his time, as he lived in an old patriarchal society where different values could not be even imagined, but what about his teacher Plato. In his Republic, Plato described women as equal citizens with the same virtues and abilities as men… Although his concept of ideal state is a bit problematic, it is amazed how lucid he was to deny any prejudice his time and culture imposed about men and women.
