I don't need one now, but I've always been afraid to take a blood test. I would like to get one to test my cholesterol, but I don't want a blood test. Everyone says it doesn't really hurt, but I get very weak when I think about it, and I hate the idea of someone sticking a needle in my vein and drawing blood! So, any ideas on what I can do to get over this? And does it really not hurt?

The best way to take a blood test, is to have look away while the technician is setting up, and ask them to tell you to breathe just before they make the injection.

You will not even notice it if you are looking away and breathing when they make the injection. And don't look at the tube while they are drawing, fix you eyes on an object in another direction.

When you go in for the blood test, tell the girl that is drawing the blood, how you feel, if she is any good, she will help you.
I also had a fear of needles, and when I go in for blood tests, she tells me to look the other way, and we talk about shopping or antiques..which I like. It doesn't take very long, and the initial poke is the only thing you will feel.

Tell your doctor your fear also, they should be able to fit you to the right person drawing the blood.

It REALLY doesn't hurt, just stings slightly. This is one of those things you just have to do, and get out of the way. After the first time, it will be easy. Are you afraid to see the blood being drawn? Look away and think of something pleasant. It only takes a minute.

Try not to focus too much on what's exactly going on. Think of it this way...would you rather have open heart surgery because your cholesterol was too high and you have to have bypass surgery to repair the results of a heart attack? The small amount of pain associated with the blood drawing could save you a lot of trouble. Believe me, I work in a hospital lab and I do this procedure all the time. It really helps to think of the "Big Picture".

It is only a pinch and only lasts for a second. The blood actually being drawn does not hurt. The best thing to do is NOT watch the procedure...look away and focus on an object in the other direction...like art on the wall, a person, a chair, etc. You will do fine

I have to get alot of blood tests, and I am deathly afraid of needles, so whenever I go, I bring someone along with me, and they hold my hand, and I sing to myself...

[I'm in a band, so I sing whatever song we're working on at that time...]

And your name is mountain iron, eh?

Ever break a bone? Get a tattoo? Cut your finger with a knife? Slam your finger with a hammer? Get hurt in a fight? Stub your toe? Get a charlie horse?

ALL of these hurt more and take time to heal. Use your MIND and logic or just suffer.

And your name is mountain iron, eh?

you can have your cholestrol tested with a finger prick.
Getting your blood drawn is not bad, just be sure to drink plenty of water so your veins are nice and plump

It's a lot easier than getting a shot. It really doesn't hurt.

Sometimes you feel it a little, and sometimes you don't even feel it. Suggestion - turn the other way from the tech, and close your eyes.
