Yes, they can. However, you HAVE to plant them in the shade and preferably in an area of your yard that is cool, if possible. You have to either create or utilize a microclimate in your yard for hostas in a hot, sunny climate like Texas. I would definitely mulch them to keep as much water in the soil as possible.

Ferns are good companion plants for hostas, as are annual impatiens. Remember too that there are different varieties of hostas, some dwarfs and some huge with wide, sprawling leaves. What varieties you plant and what companion plants you plant with them depends on your needs and what effect you are trying to create.

I tend to think hostas should be planted in the spring.

I recall seeing hostas on the University of North Texas campus in Denton, north of Dallas. They did well, but usually only if they were in the shade. I suspect the heat and/or dry weather there was pretty intense for them, especially as I've seen them here in the Pacific Northwest doing much better. I'd try to plant them in an area that gets little sun, or perhaps gets only early morning sun that's not quite so intense as a western exposure. You should be able to plant them now; just be sure to keep the soil around them moist to enable them to establish good roots before winter, which will allow them to over-winter successfully.

Now is the time to plant them so they will come back next year. You will not have them for much longer this year but you will have a good show in the spring in summer next year. You should plant perennials in the fall but most people want to plant them when they are blooming.

Sure. Plant them now or in the spring from pots. Make sure you plant them in the shade and a cool area. The heat here will be tough on them come next summer.
