With your current salary, can you survive in Singapore?? I mean enough to have a house, a car, children (2 -3), give your children proper education, and save enough to retire??

If you mean survive, then sure-'cos Singaporeans are survivors type from a rat race get it yourself society. But then both parents need to work hard. Single parent with kids, very difficult. If want to eat out often in good restaurants and travel out of asia, then you better be rich.
What house. Even govenment build flats cost so much to buy and maintain, taking up most of the salary earned. Forget about the more expensive houses. I wanted one when I was young, now I gave up hope of buying my own landed property.
Early retirement? Don't even dream. More like work past retirement age till last day alive. Don't have major illness or the whole family suffers with you, 'cos other then needing to look after you, also face more financial problems.
Look at the long queues every week to buy Toto. Everyone wants to get out of their poor misery life. Just work and work. How to think of retirement if you still can barely satisfy the minimum needs of today. Sigh! Good luck to you.

If you want to have a house, children and provide them with proper education I think it is almost impossible for us to have a car. As for retiring I don't think we can retire happily when we reached the retired age coz $$ is never enough

Mothly installment on a 5 room hdb house is abt 1.2 k, car takes away another 1 k. Grocery shopping, pub, etc, 1k, Going out jalan jalan, shopping, etc, 1 k (whole family). So just between hubby and wife you need 4 plus to "survive". Then say got insurance, and then savings for kids...must keep aside 1 k at least a month for all those.

well of course everyone here has a home to live lah, none is put on to be on the streets even though you are on dire straits. thanks to the government policies that they take care of the singaporean poor. here the surviving is really very tough, even fresh grads from famous schools like nus earn a basic pay of about $800 - $1200, hardly anyone earns more than $1500 - $1800 unless you really well educated and can be capable then can earn $2000 + and its true that even if you have a $10000 figure + salary also, surviving here is tough and money is always never enough. Well, actually have to work out some plans, coz for singaporeans buying cars/houses are relatively cheaper and subsidized compared to a alien or a permanent resident. the education is expensive for children, but as our prime minister say often on tv speech, its the best education our children receive on this part of the world. car is almost not necessary, its like toys running on a house. toy cars running on a house. because its really so fully developed and all mrt stations, bus interchanges are all airconditioned and very hightech and looks clean and its absolutely safe to travel. only disadvantage is can see smelly people and of course cant blame them because the climate here is humid. some people prefer those smelly people to take last compartment of the mrt, but its all nonsense. you can have the right to travel anywhere and sit anywhere be it mrt/bus, and give seat to children, old aged people or pregnant women and drunk people too. what i mean is that, public transport here is really very effective. taxi's mostly avoid coz they are earning more money nowadays, every customer they pick up easily they earn $10+ or minimum of $6+ but when you ask them they wont accept the fact. Topping up for the ez link card for your mrt/bus transport is by itself a very expensive affair. Slowly you will feel the burden/pressure. So, car you totally forget to have one, as even if you can buy, for locals they can pay monthly $400 something, like easy monthly installments, but for the oil also quite cheap, but you know we have those parking vouchers, electronic road pricing etc and maintenance charges and annually you end up spending a lot. And the car after 5 years you have to dispose, scrap it off, not sure about the time limit, but there is a scrap time. The value is peanuts. Dont regret for that after spending so much on maintenance, all cars look here shiny coz not much dust. But having a car, owners do really feel the pain. So drop that idea. Public transport is already way too excellent. Mercedes Benz and Volvo buses, some more we got upgrading of buses. Some buses aircons too effective, and tv. Some trains also got it with tv and security cams. So feel safe and secured lah. Well, for retirement the government has a central provident fund scheme which take care of your medical health requirements once you retire, or else you can opt to withdraw, but that also involves medishield payments etc... if you work for government sector, this automatically gets activated. If private sector, then its upto you, you have to voluntarily top up lah. But still not enough for saving to retire, singaporeans all have assets in millions I agree. But cash, no mah. Thats the life here, but somehow life goes on. Soon, there gonna be a time coming, where on some pedestrian access road walks, you gotta pay before entering. Its becoming fully developing, but some disadvantages, cost of living damn high. Everything you buy, a normal home made snack at a mini mart, $1 minimum. Too costly. If you are foreignor, visit singapore as a tourist, spend your hard earned money, go back in 1 week or 2 weeks, if you considering staying here for long time, We as Singaporeans welcome you, but later you will regret, well it all depends on how much you earn, but that really has no meaning, as doesnt matter how much you earn, you will always feel the pain. So, working life never ends, there is no such thing as retirement in Singapore. If you retire, you die. Either retire overseas like australia etc ... Here cant afford to retire, atleast have to keep cleaning mrt hand railings or coffee shop tables. Hawker Centers I mean. Work until die is the rule of Singapore. So, hope all these things creates an reality check for you to survive in singapore, not only for you ... but for everybody.

Inspite all these things, water is clean, any tap can drink and its tested by WHO. Internet speed too high. Then too much of copying USA. Can say USA Dad, Singapore Son. Still we like singapore for its multi racialism, multi culturism, food, drinks and safety and cleanliness. Thanks to our Army, Police, Civil Defence to protect Singapore and make sure we sleep in peace and tight every day safely.
