In my mind, we all need food, clothing & shelter!
Therefore, chop off 10% for 'savings' & divide the shelter with the
1.-food [includes entertainment expenses!]
2.-clothing [includes incidentals!]
for an actual third of income towards
3.-shelter [includes transportation!]!

As little as possible and still achieve your standard of living.
If you are smart enough to understand the concept of taxes -vs- take-home-pay you are smart enought to buy your own pad. In that case, consider your house like a savings account.
Rent, otoh, is always a throw-away...

You shouldn't pay more a month than you make a week. Of course if the heat or electric is included then you can pay more.

25 to 30 percent.....apt managers look at your income its part of the reason you have to "apply" they want to make sure you can afford it too!
